Opening a healthcare clinic is something we had thought about, planned for, and dreamed about for over 12 years. We knew there would be challenges along the way. What we didn't realize was just how many of those challenges would happen before we ever treated our first patient… Our journey to opening Elevate Health has been exciting, frustrating, stressful, rewarding, and at times almost comical in a way you would see on a sitcom. There have been moments when everything seemed to fall perfectly into place, immediately followed by moments when absolutely nothing went according to plan. But, looking back now we wouldn't change where we ended up.

Finding a Home for Elevate Health

Our initial greatest challenge that stands out was simply finding a location. We would find a space we liked, start negotiating, think we finally had something locked down and then something would happen. In some cases, what we thought were good-faith verbal agreements seemingly became an opportunity for property owners to leverage our interest into better offers from other prospective tenants. Then there were the buildings themselves. When you're trying to create a professional, modern, upscale healthcare clinic, you begin looking at commercial real estate very differently. You work with a designer discussing flooring, entrances, layouts, accessibility, treatment rooms, signage. This forms a vision, a plan, a dream in your mind. You’re excited about the plan and then find yourself chatting with a landlord who is inexplicably attached to some particularly tacky remnants of the building's former life with an ice cream parlour vibe and not willing to budge. Apparently, creating your dream healthcare clinic occasionally involves passionately arguing against the preservation of ice cream shop décor. After enough false starts, it became difficult not to wonder whether we were going to find the right place.

And then we found West Hillhurst.

When the Stars Finally Aligned

From the beginning, West Hillhurst felt different. There was the hustle and bustle of the neighbourhood, great foot traffic, an incredible sense of community involvement, and almost unbelievably after everything else we had encountered fantastic rent. After battling through all the challenges of finding a location, suddenly the pieces seemed to fit together. It genuinely felt like the stars had aligned. This was where Elevate Health was supposed to be. We signed on to our new home excited about what was ahead and ready to get to work. Of course, the universe apparently decided we had become a little too comfortable.

"We'll Be Open in May"

Renovations began in February. The projected opening date was May. We planned around that timeline. We gave notice at our previous company and prepared to transition into our new business. There was a tremendous amount of excitement surrounding the idea that, after all the planning and searching, we were finally going to be working for ourselves in a clinic we had created. Shaping our future in a way that was exciting, different and empowering. May came closer. The building wasn't ready. Our opening was pushed to June. June came closer. The building still wasn't ready. Our opening was pushed again. Suddenly, a project that had seemed to have a clear finish line became a waiting game. This was probably one of the most difficult parts of the entire process. Once you've committed to opening a business, there are decisions that can't easily be undone. You've left your previous workplace. You've taken on expenses. You’ve started to pay bills. You've begun communicating with patients. You've made commitments based on a timeline that you ultimately don't completely control. Every delay has consequences and we weren't finished with delays yet.

The Licensing Puzzle

As construction finally approached completion, we encountered another hurdle: city licensing. There was a communication breakdown between the City of Calgary, our contractor, and us regarding exactly which inspection documentation was required before our business licence could be issued.   It sounds like a relatively small administrative problem. When your ability to open your doors depends on it, it doesn't feel small. The licensing issue pushed our opening back yet again, this time into July. This was particularly difficult because patients had been patiently waiting for us to open. We had begun booking appointments based on the information and timelines available to us, only to find ourselves having to contact those same patients to cancel and reschedule their appointments. As healthcare professionals, that was probably one of the hardest parts. These weren't simply bookings on a calendar. They were people who trusted us, had waited for us, and needed treatment. We wanted nothing more than to finally open the doors and get back to doing what we actually became healthcare professionals to do—help people.

And then Finally…. We Opened!

After months of searching, negotiating, renovating, waiting, rescheduling, problem-solving, and occasionally wondering what else could possibly go wrong, Elevate Health opened its doors. Not with a giant celebration. Not with everything finished exactly the way we imagined. We started with a soft opening offering physiotherapy services. And that was perfectly fine. Because we were finally here. There is something difficult to describe about walking into a clinic after watching it exist first as an idea, then a commercial listing, then a construction site, and finally as an actual healthcare practice. Treating patients, the excitement around a vision coming to life, not just for you but for the people you treat and have gotten to know quite well. The problems don't disappear when the doors open. There are still things to finish, systems to improve, and an endless list of things we'd like to do. But now there are also patients walking through the doors. That's when a building starts becoming a clinic. The smiles on your patients and staff seeing the vision become a reality. When a clinic becomes a home.

The Next Chapter

Now the story is changing. Instead of asking, "When can we open?" we're asking, "What can we build next?" “What can we improve?   We've been on a hiring spree and recently recruited two fantastic massage therapists to join our team. We will continue expanding our services and bringing together healthcare professionals who share our vision for what Elevate Health can become.   Our goal has never simply been to fill treatment rooms. We want to create a multidisciplinary healthcare clinic built around great practitioners, strong relationships, and genuine involvement in the community we're fortunate enough to be part of. A place where healthcare isn’t a source of stress, but you can feel welcome, appreciated and know you will be taken care of. West Hillhurst increasingly feels like exactly the place where we were meant to do it. Our next major milestone will be our Grand Opening later this year, when we'll finally have the opportunity to properly celebrate Elevate Health with our patients, neighbours, friends, families, and community.   Looking back, our path here certainly wasn't the one we planned. Our May opening became June. June became July. There were locations that fell apart, construction delays, licensing problems, cancelled appointments, and more than a few stressful days. But perhaps that's part of building something from scratch. You make the best plan you can. Something goes wrong. You adapt. You solve the next problem. And you keep moving forward. Eventually, you get to stand inside the place you spent so long imagining and realize: We actually did it.

And now we're just getting started!
